Customers prefer to feel secure on your website and to know you take security seriously. Google does too and without SSL, Chrome will highlight your website as 'Not Secure' along with your search listing.

Plus without SSL installed on your hosting you are missing out on modern web features.

Getting a SSL for your website

To enable HTTPS on your website, you need a certificate (a type of file) from a Certificate Authority (CA).

There are many to choose from in today's market place but I recommend that you choose Let's Encrypt as your CA.

Most modern website hosting control panels allow you to automate the process of obtaining, installing and hopefully renewing every 3 months. Plus with Let's Encrypt certificates are free to obtain.

It is also important to make sure you secure all your domains and sub domains that you set up.

Let's Encrypt

Let's Encrypt is a Certificate Authority (CA) that provides SSL certificates at no charge.

Their certificates are trusted by all major browsers and are as safe as the certificates that you get from other providers.

The Let's Encrypt SSL certificates renew every 3 months which can be automated.

SSL should really be TLS

I've used SSL here as this is still a common term in use for certificates but we should really be calling them TLS certificates.

TLS evolved from a previous encryption protocol called Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), which was developed by Netscape. TLS version 1.0 actually began development as SSL version 3.1, but the name of the protocol was changed before publication in order to indicate that it was no longer associated with Netscape. Because of this history, the terms TLS and SSL are sometimes used interchangeably.

What is the difference between TLS and HTTPS?

HTTPS is an implementation of TLS encryption on top of the HTTP protocol, which is used by all websites as well as some other web services. Any website that uses HTTPS is therefore employing TLS encryption.
